That is me on the bicycle. You may not see me at #SheSpeaks17 because I may be asked not to return in light of my shenanigans. I had SO MUCH FUN!!!
Since my return, God has been reverberating this reminder through my heart: My weakness is my God-given platform. It’s where God’s strength will be seen and my ego is automatically tabled. I need to be more interested in people following Jesus than following me, and until I am; He can’t use me. So this is my call to be real and purge ourselves of any imitation. It's a call for us to never use our writing, or any of our gifts, to exalt self, but to exalt Jesus. I want to make sure I am marketing Jesus, not myself, and especially not a fictitious version of myself.
If I am really posting good content, then not everyone will like it. There might be just one person whose heart needed those words and one person has to be worth it. I have written books, whole books and they have been birthed through blood, sweat, and tears. I have struggled when not everyone has thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. But I have also seen that individual lives were changed. I have seen women pick up prayer in a way they never knew they could. That is worth all of the effort and hours that went into my writing because I know it was Jesus. Only Jesus can change a life. Only Jesus can establish my steps and change me into what He has for me. So if I judge myself through His eyes and not the world’s, only then can I be useful. If I don’t see my value to Jesus then all the Instagram followers in the world won’t give me the confidence to speak Truth.
Instead of worrying about our Instagram followers, maybe we should worry about the kind of followers Jesus had. He had 12 men who followed him. Just 12 followers changed the entire world because of His personal touch in their lives. He discipled them; it was personal. When Jesus said we are supposed to become fishers of men, I doubt Facebook is what He meant. At the same time, we are called to be a light in the darkness and social media is a place that we can shine our Jesus. So this isn’t a call to give up Facebook or Instagram, it’s simply a call not to lose sight of why we speak and what we speak. If we choose popular over priceless, if we put trendy over Truth, then we won’t be timeless. We won’t matter to generations and we won’t be counted among those who restore the breach or build foundations for future generations (Isaiah 58:12). We can’t lose our personal touch, in our interaction with others, or our time with Jesus. This writing thing, I don’t want it to be about something I have to say, because on any given day the only thing of worth in me is Jesus. So it has to be about Him. It has to be an overflow of my heart from personal time with Him or it may be popular, but it won’t be priceless. So whatever you do, be real, show your weakness because that is where God is exalted. Don’t lose the personal or you have lost everything.
Father, we come before your throne right now and ask for your power to be made perfect in our weakness. Let us boast gladly about our weakness, so that your power may rest on us (2 Corinthians 12:9). Let us keep in step with the spirit (Galatians 5:25). Give us courage to obey and to be who you made us to be.
In Jesus name, Amen
